'A Brave Heart: The Lizzie Velasquez Story' to screen March 24

Campaigning for the first federal anti-bullying bill
March 16, 2016

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society presents a four-part Women’s Film Series to be presented during March, Women’s History Month. This year’s theme is Women Changing the World. The third film of the series, "A Brave Heart: The Lizzie Velasquez Story," is being screened in collaboration with Coastal Georgetown American Association of University Women  at 7 p.m., Thursday, March 24, Cinema Art Theater, 17701 Dartmouth Drive, No. 2, Dartmouth Plaza, Lewes (behind Wawa). Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

"A Brave Heart: The Lizzie Velasquez Story" is the inspiring journey of 26-year-old, 58-pound Lizzie Velasquez who went from cyber-bullying victim to anti-bullying crusader. Born with a rare syndrome that prevents her from gaining weight, Lizzie was first bullied in elementary school for looking different, and later as a teenager who discovered a YouTube video calling her the “world’s ugliest woman.” The film chronicles her emotional journey from motivational speaker to Capitol Hill lobbyist as she campaigns for the first federal anti-bullying bill.

A post-film discussion will be led by Christine Gillean, a retired Pennsylvania elementary school principal living in Milford. She currently serves on the board of the Coastal Georgetown AAUW. The AAUW’s mission is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research.

Admission for this event is $6 for members and $8 for future members. To purchase tickets, go to www.rehobothfilm.com or call 302-645-9095, Ext. 1.
