The Cape baseball team held a Friday night tune up March 20, as the Vikings welcomed New Jersey powerhouse Clearview Regional High School from Mullica Hill for a scrimmage at Chris Short Memorial Field.
Even though the Vikings gave up three home runs and multiple hits, Cape coach Ben Evick saw bright spots for his young squad as they strung together numerous hits later in the game.
“All in all, it was a pretty good day,” Evick said. “We got a lot of good work in and our pitchers got to run their pitch counts up a little bit in preparation for regular-season games starting next Thursday.”
Evick was happy with the team’s defensive effort, as it turned three double plays.
“Offensively, we were able to string some hits together later in the game, which put a lot of pressure on them,” Evick said. “We left a lot of runners on base, which we need to do a better job battling out at bats and putting balls in play hard to put more pressure on the defense.”
Evick praised Jack Simeone, Trizton Willey and Joe Ruark for their defensive play in the infield.
The Vikings still have some time to work on their game weaknesses before taking on Northern Division rival Caesar Rodney Thursday, March 26, in Camden.
“We’re excited with how our preseason games have gone and are ready to get rolling in the regular season,” said Evick.
