The Cape baseball team moved into the quarterfinals of the state tournament with an 11-1 five-inning defeat of Newark Charter May 24 at Chris Short Field.

Cape’s Dom Mangini and Emmett Wheatley each went 2-for-2, while Jaxon Clampitt went 2-for-3 with a double. Jase Mitchell delivered an RBI double.

Cape senior pitcher Brad Marks picked up his sixth win of the season, going 4.1 innings, striking out three batters.

“My off-speed [stuff] wasn’t working for me today, so I just tried to throw strikes,” said Marks. “I trusted my defense to do a good job and they did. It was a good win for us.”

Jase and Liam Mitchell, Mangini, Trey Hitchcock, Clampitt, Aaden Johnson and Nick Clampitt each had an RBI.

Johnson, Brady Kosc and Malachi Woods each had a stolen base.

“We were pleased with today’s outcome,” said Cape coach Ben Evick. “The guys came here excited to play. It’s nice to face someone that you haven’t seen yet. They put the ball in play and strung some good hits together and ran the bases well. We made good decisions on the bases. We rolled double plays – the defense played well. Brad was able to compete knowing we were going to make plays behind him.”

The Vikings will host Delaware Military Academy Tuesday, May 27, at Chris Short Field.
