Cape had 11 different scorers hit the back of the twine in the Vikings’ 23-1 running-clock victory over Sussex Academy to garner the 2025 Boys’ Lacrosse Henlopen Conference Championship game held May 17 at Legends Stadium.

The Vikings defense took a 15-0 lead into the halftime break. They continued their reign over the Seahawks in the second half, allowing just one goal in the waning minutes of the third period before time ran out in the contest.

Cape took 35 shots in the contest. Burke Healy led the Vikings offense with six goals. Grant Conway and Braddock Smith tallied three each. Evan Burris, Brenner Short and Grady Trivits each hit the twine twice. Ronan Presler, Pierce Conway,  AJ Grapski, Carter Nemcic and Marshall Keys scored one goal apiece.

Braddock Smith was credited with three assists. Patrick Healy had two, while Grant Conway, Burke Healy, Tanner Wyshock,  Burris, Short and Nemcic each had a helper.

The game featured breakout moments for some young Vikings, as Pierce Conway and Grady Trivits each scored their first varsity goal.

“It feels good to get the first goal of my varsity career,” said Conway. “It’s also a great feeling to play on the team with my big brother Grant. It’s a pretty special feeling.”

“It was a great moment,” said Trivits. “I’m here with all my friends that are upperclassmen, and my older brother that graduated in 2023. They are happy and wanted me to score.”

Burke Healy, who played on the Seahawks’ varsity team when he was in eighth grade before coming to Cape, has scored 10 goals in the last two contests.

“It’s awesome to go out winning the fourth straight Henlopen Conference Championship,” said Healy. “I’ve been playing with this group of guys all of my life, coming up through the Atlantic Club and travel. I’m happy to play with my younger freshman brother Patrick in the second half. It’s been a great senior year.”

Cape goalies Mason Trench and Patrick Little each made two stops in the contest.

“The boys played a good game,”  said Geoff Shupard, who has three Henlopen championships to his credit as the Vikings head coach. “These seniors are leaving with four straight conference titles and have set a great example for the younger guys. We are excited to get back to work and get ready for the rest of the postseason.”

Sussex Academy head coach Andrew Fox was voted as Henlopen Conference Coach of the Year.

“We are a young team,” said SAS coach Andrew Fox. “Every year we have young guys coming in showing huge potential. We are a small team that knows how to play the game. I think there is still room for improvement, playing teams better. We didn’t accomplish all of our goals, but we still won the south, got back to playoffs, and showed that we are a team that is going to play.”

No. 2 seed Cape hosts No. 15 Sanford Tuesday, May 20, at 5 p.m. in the DIAA State Tournament first round, while No. 14 Sussex Academy travels to No. 3 Tatnall for a 4 p.m. face-off.
