The Cape Henlopen boys’ swim team took their Henlopen Conference championship squad to the DIAA swim championship in the Rawstrom Natatorium at the University of Delaware and garnered fourth place with 176 points. Taking the top spot was Salesianum with 389 points, second went to St. Mark’s with 273 and third was taken by the Charter School of Wilmington.
“I thought we did great,” said Cape senior Holden Tighe. “Lots of school records were broken at the championships. It wasn’t a bad way to end the season, and I think Cape is gonna continue to impress at states over the next few years.”
Rounding out the top 10 were Newark Charter in fifth with 143 points, Brandywine sixth with 133, Tower Hill seventh with 131, Sanford eighth with 120, Mount Sophia ninth with 96 and Archmere 10th with 86.
Sussex Academy placed 12th, Lake Forest took 13th, 16th place went to Indian River and Sussex Tech placed 23rd. Delmarva Christian had its very first swimmer qualification and garnered 26th place.

Dan has worked for the Cape Gazette for more than 30 years as a photographer and reporter, covering high school sports and happenings around eastern Sussex County. He won a photography award from the National Newspaper Association, and numerous awards from the Maryland, Delaware, D.C. Press Association. A Delaware native, Dan graduated from Cape in 1972 and returned as a teacher and coach in the 1980s. He retired from the classroom in 2016. He was inducted into Cape High’s Legends Stadium in 2016. In his spare time, Dan enjoys spending time with his wife, two sons, grandchildren and dogs.
