May 21, 2021

The ninth-seeded Cape baseball team dropped a heartbreaking 6-1 game to No. 8 Salesianum May 22 in Wilmington.

Cape scored in the first inning when Timmy Hitchcock singled. He moved around the horn and scored on a Hunter Rauch ground ball.

The scored remained in the Vikings’ favor until the bottom of the fifth, when the Sallies scored to tie it up and put five more in the book in the bottom sixth.

Gage Joseph started for Cape and lasted five innings, allowing four hits and three runs while walking one.

Josh Reinhold and Hitchcock both went 2-for-3 for the Vikings. Justin Marsh also hit safely for the Vikings.

Zach Czarnecki took the W for Sallies.

Vikings top Sanford

Cape baseball put the pedal to the metal bats and powered to a 12-0 five-inning state tournament victory over Sanford May 20 at Chris Short Field.

The action came fast and furious, as the Vikings put up three runs in the first inning and never looked back, scoring two in the second and put the proverbial nail in the coffin with a seven-run third inning.

Nick Cox delivered a three-run homer in the third, while Justin Marsh went yard four batters later.

“He threw a fastball right down the middle,” Cox said. “I just took it out.”

“This is setting the tone for Saturday,” Marsh said. “[Sallies] beat us at home. We want to beat them at their home.”

The Vikings had 10 hits in the game. Hunter Rauch went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Austin Rhue went 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Gage Joseph went 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Mason Kosc went 2-for-3. Timmy Hitchcock had a single.

Ty Husbands, Hitchcock and Ethan Hazzard combined for a shutout on the mound, striking out nine batters. Cape didn't commit a single error in the field.

Hitchcock picked up the W, pitching 2.1 innings of no-hit ball.

He came into the game in the second inning with the bases loaded and two outs and got a ground out to get out of the inning.
