Cape Gazette travels to Earth’s southernmost continent

April 14, 2017

Dee Speck and Linda Kauffman recently returned from a 21-day expedition to Antarctica, South Georgia and the Falkland Islands.  “We travelled from Ushuaia, Argentina aboard the MV Sea Spirit with 110 fellow passengers,” said Linda.  “The trip included 18 landings by Zodiac and was at times very intense;  involving hiking up glaciers and crossing islands on snowy, windy days. We saw humpback whales bubble feeding, albatross, petrels, pods of Orca whales and seals. We also enjoyed watching all 6 different species of penguins including King, Gentoo, Adele, Rockhopper, Magellanic, and Macaroni. The penguins were in all stages of development from egg to adult.”

This picture was taken on the continent of Antarctica at Orne Harbor after the two enjoyed a rather arduous hike up the glacier. Their ship is in the background amidst some beautiful mountains and glaciers.
