John and Linda Kurpjuweit of Millsboro boarded the Golden Eagle Luxury Train in St. Petersburg, Russia and headed north to cross the Arctic Circle on New Year’s Day. Their destination was the Snowhotel in Kirkenes, Norway where they left the train for a two-night stay. While at the SnowHotel the Kurpjuweits visited the resident reindeer, went dogsledding across the frozen fjords and enjoyed ice fishing for king crabs. While they were kept busy they still had time to catch up with the local news in the Cape Gazette before getting back on the train for a trip south to Moscow.
Kirkenes is a small town in far northeastern Norway, close to the Finnish and Russian borders. It’s about 310 miles north of the Arctic Circle and is known for its views of the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights. Each winter the Kirkenes Snowhotel is rebuilt from fresh snow.
