Cape girls’ lax wins battle of the undefeated

Vikings move to 8-0
April 15, 2019

The Cape girls’ lacrosse team took everything the previously undefeated Auks could check them with and stood victorious 13-7 April 13 at Archmere. Cape moves to 8-0, while the Auks drop to 7-1.

Alia Marshall, Meredith Lockwood and Chloe Schaeffer each scored hat tricks in the game. Emily Monigle hit the twine for two, and Sawyer Walker and Anna Stancofski scored one each. Lockwood and Lola Messick tallied one assist apiece.

The Auks came out with a slow-down offense, seemingly trying to negate the Vikings’ fast-paced, running style of play. After 19 minutes of play, the score was just 3-1 in favor of the visiting Vikings. The first half ended with Cape ahead 4-3.

“It was definitely a physical game,” said Schaeffer. “When we came out, it was hot and we weren’t used to that, so it took a while to acclimate ourselves to the game. We just have to work together a little more on offense. Everyone can go to goal.”

“With their slow-down offense, we started off sitting on our heels letting them pass it,” Marshall said. “I think more toward the end of the game we got a little more aggressive, taking some chances, and caused them to turn the ball over. The key is we have to control the pace.”

“We realize that we could go out, pressure and get the ball, especially behind the goal,” said middie defender Cam Baldwin. “We all work better as a unit when everything is moving a lot faster.”

“It was a tough-fought game,” said Cape coach Lindsey Underwood. “We had to make adjustments throughout to come out with the win. Archmere is a good team with some solid players. Our stick work just wasn’t there in the first half, and it took the half to adjust and start going one-on-one instead of running our plays that involved passing.”

Caroline Donovan scored two goals and one helper for the Auks, while Kate Olsen, Olivia MacMillan, Bridget McGonigle, Lauren Ross and Alex Harrington each added a goal.

Cape goalie Laci Dixon was credited with four stops, while Auks keeper Maura Smeader made nine saves.

The Vikings junior varsity won its seventh game of 2019 with a 16-1 thrashing of the Auks JV.

Riley Keen burned the Auks with seven goals and an assist. Sophie Schoenfeld scored three times and added an assist. Caroline Maull and Lauryn Head hit for two goals, and Katie Knarr and Maren Buckaloo notched a goal each and three and one assists, respectively.

Cape JV goalie Jhayden Hollomon was credited with a save.
