Cape girls’ tennis downs Seahawks 5-0

On a chilly, windy afternoon when most people would be curled up in front of a fireplace watching TV, the Cape and Sussex Academy girls’ tennis squads were battling it out for Route 9 bragging rights at the Vikings’ home courts. When the last match was over, the Vikings had taken a 5-0 victory. 

Cape’s first singles Abby Hazzard took a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Sussex Academy’s Karina Lopez. Cape won at second singles with Kathryn Costello’s 7-5, 2-6 and 10-7 tie break win over the Seahawks’ Sumita Halder. Third singles was taken by Cape’s Julia DiSabatino in a 7-5,6-4 win over Macy Wheatley.

The Vikings first doubles team of Mya DiSabatino and Courtney Kosc defeated Sussex Academy’s Gia Berberian and Natalia Gatti 6-2, 6-2, and the Cape second doubles pair of Anika Sekhri and Ailene Corey downed the Seahawks duo of Emma Feagans and Ryan Shipp 6-1, 6-2.

Cape moves to 4-1 while the Seahawks are 1-4.

In boys’ action, the Seahawks defeated the Vikings 4-1. Cape moves to 4-2 while the Seahawks are 3-2. See full results for the boys’ match at capevikingssports.com.

Dan has worked for the Cape Gazette for more than 30 years as a photographer and reporter, covering high school sports and happenings around eastern Sussex County. He won a photography award from the National Newspaper Association, and numerous awards from the Maryland, Delaware, D.C. Press Association. A Delaware native, Dan graduated from Cape in 1972 and returned as a teacher and coach in the 1980s. He retired from the classroom in 2016. He was inducted into Cape High’s Legends Stadium in 2016. In his spare time, Dan enjoys spending time with his wife, two sons, grandchildren and dogs.
