Cape High gears up for graduation events

Live, virtual celebrations set for June 8-9
June 5, 2020

Celebrating the Cape High Class of 2020 will be a little different this year due to COVID-19, but district officials have planned several events to recognize seniors.

The Journey of the Class of 2020 drive-thru experience at Hudson Fields welcomes students, families, friends and community members from 1:30 to 6 p.m., Monday, June 8. Attendees should enter at Hudson Road and proceed past personalized signs celebrating each graduate, and teachers and volunteers cheering them along the way, before exiting at Eagle Crest Road.

Virtual commencement kicks off at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 9; to watch, go to https://www.vegovirtual.com/cape-henlopen and use the password CHGRAD. The link will only work at the designated time; a virtual waiting room countdown will begin at 6 p.m.

The event will feature traditions such as valedictorian and class president speeches, the announcement of names by advisors, and a keynote address by Cape High grad and country music star Jimmie Allen. All graduates will receive a downloadable copy of the event.

On Wednesday, June 10, and Thursday, June 11, staff will deliver personalized signs and diplomas to each graduate.

Cape High Principal Nikki Miller said officials are still planning an in-person event to celebrate students at a time to be determined.

“If COVID-19 has taught us anything, it is that we need to care about our community and the people that make this area so special,” Miller said. “It is easy to get wrapped up in our own lives, but this has taught us that ensuring people stay safe and healthy takes sacrifice from everyone. By getting creative and joining forces, we have and will continue to celebrate our class of 2020. We look forward to seeing people come out to Hudson Fields to celebrate our graduates. On the evening of June 9, as we all watch together, I hope we can all take a minute to appreciate the dedication of our students. When the time is right and it is safe for us to celebrate in person, together, we most certainly will.”
