I read with interest the article on the front page of the Cape Gazette titled, “Cape school board forum focuses on key issues.” The topics included equity, safety, communication and growth. These are all needed discussions, but in reading key issues, I wondered why academics and finances weren’t also discussed. According to U.S. News and World Report, Delaware ranks 42nd for education in Pre-K through 12 out of our 50 states.
Where is the rigorous push for excellence in vital subjects for the students’ future success? Cape Henlopen has a 26% proficiency in math, 28.5% proficiency in science and a 51% proficiency in reading. The district spends $14,851 per pupil for this education. The school board and state and federal governments allocate the school’s funding. The average teacher’s salary is $59,795.
Let’s have a balance between social justice and teaching the basics to our up-and-coming future leaders. Students should learn how to think for themselves, to analyze, examine methodically, and to study in a systematic and careful way.
