The Cape girls’ soccer team has only lost half the games its have played in just over a third of a season, but the girls sit on one win after Indian River downed the Vikings 4-0 April 16. IR improved to 7-0, while Cape is now 1-3-2.
The night started out strong for Cape, with the JV team defeating IR 2-0 and the varsity team pressing against the visitors.
Senior Alli Tucker scored twice in the first half, striking from long distance and then from a tough angle along the right flank. About 15 minutes into the second half, freshman Caroline Williamson broke free and buried a goal. Senior Ella Peterson rounded out the scoring off an assist from sophomore Denesha Purnell-Smith.
IR’s 10 shots doubled Cape’s, while the visitors earned five corners compared to the host’s one.
Junior Brynne Fox started in goal before being relieved by Jordan Willey. The duo combined for six saves. IR split time in goal between starter Catherine Bunting and freshman Ryleigh Spindler. They had five saves altogether.
Cape will head up to Smyrna Tuesday, April 21, and welcome Polytech at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, April 23.
Aaron Mushrush joined the sports team in Summer 2023 to help cover the emerging youth athletics scene in the Cape Region. After lettering in soccer and lacrosse at Sussex Tech, he played lacrosse at Division III Eastern University in St. David's, PA. Aaron coached lacrosse at Sussex Tech in 2009 and 2011. Post-collegiately, Mush played in the Eastern Shore Summer Lacrosse League for Blue Bird Tavern and Saltwater Lacrosse. He competed in several tournaments for the Shamrocks Lacrosse Club, which blossomed into the Maryland Lacrosse League (MDLL). Aaron interned at the Coastal Point before becoming assistant director at WMDT-TV 47 ABC in 2017 and eventually assignment editor in 2018.
