Senior Marissa Frederick dominated in the circle March 23, striking out 12 batters and allowing just one hit in the Lady Vikings’ 5-0 win over Milford to open the 2021 season.
Frederick, Katie Kuhlman, Jay'Lyn Slater and Gracie Whisenhunt each collected hits for the Vikings. Haleigh Baker had Milford's only hit.
The Vikings got on the board in the second inning. After Frederick delivered a single, she was knocked home on a triple by Whisenhunt. And that was all the offense the Vikings needed, as they scored a shutout in the first game of the season.
Cape added one run in the third and three runs in the fifth to ensure the victory.
“We are so proud of this team for how well they played and for picking up a win in the season opener,” said Cape head coach Shannon Timmons. ”They work hard every day at practice. They brought an intensity to the game that never wavered, and they were great teammates today. This is a young team, and they played together for the first time in this win. We have some adjustments to make, but overall we were really pleased with their effort and the results today.”
Milford’s Khyliah Reynolds struck out seven batters.
The Vikings travel to Caesar Rodney Thursday, March 25, to face the Riders in a Northern Division matchup, while the Lady Bucs host Smyrna.
