Cape, Sussex Academy, and Sussex Central have a memorable tri-meet

May 10, 2025

Competing in delightful but rare spring conditions for this year, three Cape Region high school golf teams faced off in a tri-meet May 7, that the golfers and coaches will likely remember for years to come.

The Cape Henlopen Vikings (146) swept the match against both Sussex Central (158) and Sussex Academy (161), with all teams playing well on the par 35 front nine at Kings Creek Country Club in Rehoboth Beach.

The sequence of scores shows how close things were.

Cape senior Tyler Healy, who played for Sussex Academy as a freshman, won medalist honors with a one-under par 34. Cape’s Kingston Davis took second overall with his 36. Sussex Central’s Jake Hollerback took third overall with his 37.

Travers Johnson and Ryan McNett each finished with rounds of 38. Ryan Dostal and Dominic Piperno both scored 39s for Sussex Academy, as did Trevor Clarke for Central. The Golden Knights’ Joseph Neumann posted a 40, while Quentin Bowman shot a 41 for the Seahawks. Danahy McKenna’s 42 was the final score for Sussex Academy, tied with Ryan Orth for Sussex Central.

The last time Cape went this low in a match was May 10, 2005, in a match against Polytech on the par 33 front nine at Jonathan’s Landing in Magnolia.

Central’s 158 was its best performance of the year.

When asked why the scores went so low, Cape coach Bill Geppert offered this suggestion: “I think it came from the natural rivalry between us and Sussex Academy, and even Sussex Central. I think the kids all play together in the summer, and I think that added a bit more fuel to the fire. All of them played great across the board. That’s the best round we’ve shot in forever.”

Sussex Academy coach Doug Grove said, “I’m very impressed with the 146. My old friend Tyler with his 34 was awesome. It was a great day to play. We had some unusual activity on our side of the ledger, but that’s golf. The Central kids played well too.”

Cape’s season record improved to 12-2. The Seahawks are now 7-4, while Sussex Central is 9-4 thus far.

Cape loses to Dover

Cape suffered its second close loss of the season May 5 against a much-improved Dover squad 162-164, in the Vikings’ second home match on the front nine of Rehoboth Beach Country Club. Dover senior Sawyer Shade won medalist honors with his two-over par 38.

Davis and McNett scored best for Cape with a pair of 39s. Fellow Viking Jack Tunnell posted a 42, while Jacob Gabbard and Gabby Hamstead tied for the last scoring spot with a pair of 44s.

Other Seahawks results

Salesianum traveled to Kings Creek May 5 and defeated Sussex Academy 145-158 on the front nine.

Nicholas Belgrade of Sallies won medalist honors with his one-under par 34. The other scorers for his team also posted rounds in the 30s.

Seahawks senior Piperno led his squad with a 38. The other Sussex Academy scorers included Jordan Green (39), Bowman (40) and Sam Metz (41).

On May 1, Sussex Academy traveled to Hooper’s Landing for a match against a two-player Laurel High squad, winning by a lopsided 159-284 on the front nine.

Danahy and Piperno shared medalist honors with a pair of two-over par 38s. Bohdi Williams shot a 41, and Bowman completed the Seahawks’ scoring with his 42.

Delmarva Christian results

The Delmarva Christian Academy golf team earned another split decision May 1 against Caesar Rodney and Indian River at Bear Trap Dunes.

The Royals defeated Indian River 176-191, but lost to CR 154-176. The Royals’ Joel Perry tied for medalist honors with CR’s Reagan Garnsey with even par 36s. However, the boys played the Kodiak course’s front nine and the girls played the Black Bear front nine. Ellie Walls’ 43 was the Indians’ best score.

The other Royals scorers included Avery Brown (40), Nicholas Gipko (47) and Blake Dale (52).
