The DIAA Tennis State Championships continued this week, with many local players making deep runs in their respective tournaments.
In first-singles play, Cape’s Abby Hazzard defeated Dover’s Janelle Gyambibi 6-1, 6-0 and Ursuline’s Noelle Barnak 6-1, 6-1 to reach the semifinals. She fell to top-seeded Ava Emrich 6-3, 6-0. Sussex Academy’s Karina Lopez defeated Katie Yu of Tatnall 6-4, 6-2 before falling to second-seeded Ella Strohmaier of Archmere 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.
In third-singles action, Sussex Academy’s Cate Reilly defeated Sanford’s Abigail Krape 6-0, 6-0, then Dover’s Kalisa Chambers 6-1, 6-2. She fell to top-seeded Susan Shipley of Archmere 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.
Sussex Academy’s first-doubles duo of Sage Tunnell and Sumita Haldar defeated their Indian River counterparts 6-1, 6-3 before falling to Caesar Rodney’s team in the quarterfinals. The second-doubles team of Callie Juliano and Ana Nino had a similar run, reaching the quarterfinals before falling to the second-seeded Archmere duo.
On the boys’ side, Cape first-singles player Oliver Townsend, second-singles player Trent Kauffman and third-singles player Nathaniel Hoang each won one match.
