The Cape Henlopen wrestling team competed in the DKI wrestling tournament held Dec. 9 and 10 at Bloomsburg High School in northeastern Pennsylvania and placed third in team points in the 15-team event.
Central Columbia won the team title with 243 points, followed by Troy 188, Cape Henlopen 179, Pottsville 126, Canton 121 and Mount Carmel 106.
Pennsylvania coal region teams Mahonoy Area, Schuylkill Haven, Shamokin, Tamaqua and Williams Valley also competed.
Cape crowned individual three individual champions in Sam Mohr 152, Aaron Dennis 170 and Thomas Ott at heavyweight.
Tadeo Gonzalez at 160 earned a second place; Austin Smith, 126 was third; Spencer Brittingham at 220 and J.J. Currie at 132 were fifth. Eriq Gloria at 106 and Nick Carroll at 195 placed sixth.
“Overall it was a good performance from the team,” coach Chris Mattioni said. "Our kids were working hard, listened and worked moves we have been working on in practice. It was a great trip. We went up on Thursday night and worked out at Bloomsburg University. My college coach Dave Kennedy worked with them on Thursday night. We went on a tour of the campus Friday morning and met a college admissions counselor and competed on Friday and Saturday. We finished nine points from second, but Garret Smith and Justin Lopez didn't make weight for their semifinal matches.”
The Vikings open the dual-meet season at Seaford Wednesday, Dec.14, then selected wrestlers will compete in the Beast of the East Tournament Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 17 and 18. Wrestling in the Beast of the East are Germaine Sunkett, 120; Austin Smith, 126; J.J. Currie, 132; Garrett Smith, 138; Justin Lopez, 145; Sammy Mohr, 152; Tadeo Gonzalez, 160; Aaron Dennis, 170; and Thomas Ott, heavyweight.
