Catherine Rose Alvey, enjoyed ice skating

January 22, 2019

Catherine Rose Alvey, 96, of Berlin, Md., passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family Friday, Jan. 18, 2019, at Coastal Hospice by the Lake in Salisbury, Md.

Catherine was born in New Britain, Conn., June 20, 1922, to the late Beatrice and John Confietto.

After graduating from high school, she proceeded to Bryant College where she received a diploma in secretarial training. Soon after, marriage to John Alvey brought her to the Washington, D.C. area. There, she raised four children and enjoyed living in Potomac, Md. Later, the family moved to Barnesville, Md., and Catherine became involved with Arabian horses and writing for the association’s newsletter. She also worked as a nurse’s administrator at Chestnut Lodge.

In her spare time, she earned an associate degree at Montgomery College focusing on writing and courses in recreation. Later, she volunteered at Mother of God School for 10 years where she enjoyed being a first-grade reading teacher and playground assistant.

Although born in the summer, Catherine loved cold weather and ice skating on local ponds. She continued her ice skating and dancing until she reached 90 years. Catherine also enjoyed listening to the opera with her Italian grandfather but found it ironic that she had to go back to school to learn Italian in later years. She was in her 70s when her best friend persuaded her to travel to Italy, so she did benefit from her studies.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Raymond Confietto, and sister Mildred Long. Catherine is survived by four children, Kenneth, Janice, Douglas and Nanci. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 2, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 35318 Church Road, Frankford, where friends and family may call after 10 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in Catherine’s name to Mother of God School, 20501 Goshen Road, Gaithersburg, MD 20879 mog@mogschool.com.
