Check in on aging loved ones during holiday season
Easterseals Delaware & Maryland’s Eastern Shore reminds people who are caring for an aging loved one to take the time to check in with them this holiday season, whether they live close by or are separated by hundreds of miles.
It is more important now than ever before, as visits may have become less frequent due to restrictions.
Although the distance may change, the responsibility and dedication as a caregiver remain the same. Whether one checks in by phone, by video chat or in person, Easterseals has some advice to help caregivers keep loved ones safe during the holidays and throughout the year.
Ask people from the community for help, such as neighbors and friends. This can be key if caregivers live farther away or are unable to visit. They should take the time to get to know a loved one’s neighbors and friends so they can turn to them in a time of need. Neighbors and friends can also alert caregivers if they see a problem.
Compile a list of medications and schedules in case of a medical emergency, and update it frequently. Also, consider medication reminders and organizers. Easterseals case managers may have helpful suggestions.
If a loved one is at risk for falls, go to cdc.gov to find a checklist to learn more about staying independent and when to talk to a loved one’s healthcare provider. Look through the home for possible hazards, such as unsafe stairs or loose rugs. For a home safety checklist, go to cdc.gov. Arrange for necessary home modifications such as stability bars in the shower or seat lifters for the toilet.
Easterseals has many types of assistive technology that are available for people with disabilities or aging conditions.
