Colorful kites fill sky at Cape Henlopen State Park

A royal blue sky and a strong breeze brought hundreds of kite flyers and spectators to Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes April 6 for the 44th annual Great Delaware Kite Festival. The event was sponsored by the Lewes Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau and the Delaware Division of Parks and Recreation.

The winners are as follows:

2012 Great Delaware Kite Festival Medallion Awards

Children and Teen Competitions

Children’s Best Store Bought Kite: first place, no award (judges’ tabulation error); second place, William Burke, Lewes; third place, Melanie Hawley, Nazareth, Pa.

Children’s Best Homemade Kite: first, Bridget Griffith, Takoma Park, Md.; second, Ivan Yelk, Lewes.

Most Attractive Homemade Kite: Elsa Yelk, Lewes.

Most Unusual Homemade Kite: Zachery Siple, Wilmington.

Teen - Best Store Bought Kite: first, Corey Merkel, Bowie, Md.; second, Hannah Lowe, Lewes.

Youngest Flyer: Lelia Jane Hughes, age 3, Milton.

Highest Kite Competition - open to all ages: first, Arnold Simon, Pikesville, Md.; second, Alexis Cosbey, Lewes; third, Lindsay D’Ambrogi, Lewes.

Adult Competitions

Adult Best Store Bought Kite: first, Karen Cooney-Newton, Middletown; second, Mark Blattel, Milton.

Most Attractive Homemade Kite: Heather Siple, Wilmington.

Best Flyer Homemade Kite: Heather Siple, Wilmington.

Individual Precision Kite Flying: Mark Blattel, Milton.

Open Individual Ballet Kite Flying: first, Dennis Smith, E. Brunswick, N.J.; second, Jim Cosca, Ft. Washington, Md.

Special Class Awards

Most Senior Flyer: Arnold Simon, age 62, Pikesville, Md.

Flyer Farthest From Home: Haley DelSordo, Little Meadows, Pa.

Smallest Kite: Lauren McNulty, Lincoln.

Largest Kite: Arnold Simon, Pikesville.

Gene Bookhammer Award Best All Around: Arnold Simon, Pikesville.
