Library patrons can check out botanic gardens free passes

August 14, 2022

Delaware Botanic Gardens President Ray Sander recently announced a community outreach program to provide free DBG admission passes at Sussex County public libraries. Delaware library card holders are now able to check out the free adult admission passes at DBG partner public libraries.

Sander said, “We are a community-focused public garden built by community volunteers for the enjoyment and benefit of all. We are creating new partnerships to allow all our neighbors to gain access to the beauty of Delaware Botanic Gardens. The Sussex County public libraries are an important partner in our community outreach.”

The current DBG partner Sussex County libraries offering admission passes for checkout are Frankford, Laurel, Lewes, Rehoboth Beach, Seaford, Selbyville and South Coastal, located in Bethany Beach.

Kelly Kline, Selbyville Public Library director, said, “We are thrilled to add the Delaware Botanic Gardens passes to our circulating collection. Partnerships among nonprofits enrich communities by making services, learning and experiences accessible to all.  The Selbyville Public Library is grateful for the opportunity to share this connection with our patrons.”

DBG Executive Director Sheryl Swed said, “As a nonprofit, we charge nonmember adults a nominal $15 admission fee to support our operations. Children 16 and under are always admitted free when accompanied by an adult. This free DBG adult library admission pass will allow more of our library neighbors to escape the stress of modern life and enjoy our 37-acre natural site with five major gardens.”

Swed also noted that DBG offers special free admission days throughout the year, including Earth Day, Mother’s Day and Veterans Day, for people who bring food donations for Food Bank of Delaware, and all veterans showing their military ID card receive free admission on Veterans Day.

The Delaware Botanic Gardens is located at 30220 Piney Neck Road, Dagsboro, and is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday to Sunday. Guided tours are available at 10 a.m., and on Thursdays in August, Butterflies & Blooms Classes are at 11 a.m. Sign up at delawaregardens.org.

The mission of the Delaware Botanic Gardens is to create a world-class, inspirational, educational and sustainable public botanic garden in southern Delaware for the benefit and enjoyment of all.
