Decorations delight along the Lewes-to-Georgetown Trail

Celebrated Rainbow Fence expanded, other notable decorations adorn trail
June 20, 2025

As hikers, runners and bikers traverse the Lewes-to-Georgetown Trail, they are greeted by the unique lawn decorations that litter each side of the path.

Since the initial trail segment was completed in 2016, monuments, memorials and yard decor have all been constructed by property owners to provide a distinctive experience for every passerby.

Of these ornamentations, some hold a more meaningful message. One such monument is the Rainbow Fence created by Kat Riley and Rose Moorehead. The couple lost their dog, Josie, in September 2023. To remember Josie, they constructed a colorful fence and left a few Sharpies accessible for others to contribute. Located between Minos Conaway Road and the Lewes Senior Activity Center, the fence was intended to be a space for passersby to commemorate their deceased pets. Recently, the fence has been expanded and refreshed. Names, messages and collars now adorn the planks, as the display has rapidly become a celebrated trail feature.

Not all decorations are so serious. Notably, the aptly dubbed “Mannequin House” features seasonally dressed mannequins and other quirky lawn ornaments. Similarly along the trail, monuments for musicians like Jimmy Buffett, sports teams such as the Philadelphia Phillies, and uplifting messages propagating love and hope can be found.

While some decorations take a more serious and meaningful approach, others aim to spread positivity and humor through wacky and inventive ways. With construction on the final phase of the trail slated to begin this month, these unique ornaments are only likely to continue appearing, much to the delight of all who frequent the path.
