Delaware Hyperbarics opens in Lewes

February 16, 2021

After six years doing business as Therapy at the Beach, founders Liz Guida and Steve Caldwell have expanded their services and rebranded as Delaware Hyperbarics.

Caldwell said, “As part of our evolution, we wanted to find new, alternative treatments for the people we already have, just to take it to a new level.”

The main attraction for the business at 34444 King Street Row near Lewes is what the co-founders say is the first non-hospital-affiliated, publicly accessible hyperbaric chamber in the state. A hyperbaric chamber helps the patient’s natural healing process by increasing the amount of oxygen in the body.

“We are adding hyperbaric oxygen therapy to make this an integrated health and healing center,” Guida said.

Alex Williams, medical advisor for Delaware Hyperbarics, said hyperbaric treatments can help with recovery from surgery, sports injuries, Lyme disease and even sleep disorders.

“It’s a resource giver,” she said.

While the chamber may look claustrophobic, Williams said it is quite spacious and comfortable inside. The chamber is 42 inches around, Caldwell said, and has a memory-foam mattress inside, enough space to sit up and move around, plus Wi-Fi.

“You could make a phone call in there if you wanted to,” Caldwell said.

“Or watch a movie,” Guida added.

Williams said the chamber is large enough that two people could fit inside comfortably and get the same amount of oxygen. Delaware Hyperbarics also has a gurney system to help those with mobility issues get inside. Also available on site is a smaller, softshell chamber designed as a zip-up system that fits one person.

Sessions in the chamber can last either 60 or 90 minutes depending on the client’s goals or recommendations from a doctor.

Besides the chamber, Guida said Delaware Hyperbarics also offers an infrared Sunlighten sauna that helps increase blood flow and decrease inflammation, as well as medical massage therapy and a pulse-activation therapy that helps with issues such as plantar fasciitis.

Williams said the different treatment methods can be integrated as well. For example, she said, a person being treated for Lyme disease can use the chamber to kill the bacteria in the blood and then go into the sauna to sweat it out.
