DelDOT plans improvements in Shuttle Road area
The Delaware Department of Transportation has plans to modify roadway striping on Shuttle Road from Route 1 to the intersection at Outlet/Rehoboth Gateway Driveway.
The modifications will include the narrowing of existing lanes in order to provide a separate left-turn lane for westbound traffic on Shuttle Road.
Area residents have complained about traffic back-ups in the area at several public hearings in Sussex County Council chambers. Those same complaints have been lodged with local legislators.
Work is scheduled to take place 9 p.m. until 5 a.m, Tuesday, Aug. 1, and Wednesday, Aug. 2. Lanes will be closed with flaggers on-site to direct motorists.
Motorists should be aware that construction crews and equipment will be operating in close proximity to the travel lanes and should anticipate lane shifts.
The rain date for the project is the same time on Wednesday, Aug. 2, and Thursday, Aug. 3.
The project is the result of several months of analysis and work with area legislators, said DelDOT Secretary Jennifer Cohan. “This change will allow for smoother and safer traffic flow through this high-traffic area,” she said.
“It is a step in the right direction and should provide the needed relief while we come up with a longer term solution for this road and related intersection” Cohan said.
“As a representative of the beach area, I can tell you first hand that this intersection needed attention, and not attention a year from now. I am happy to report that we were able to work with DelDOT to come up with this short term relief for residents and tourists that routinely use Shuttle Road,” said House Speaker Rep. Pete Schwartzkopf, D-Rehoboth Beach.
