Delmarva Rugby falls to Severn River in scrimmage

Team looks forward to season opener
September 1, 2017

The Delmarva Rugby Club had its final tune-up Aug. 26 with powerhouse Severn River of Maryland. When the final horn sounded, Delmarva had dropped a hard-fought 34-7 scrimmage.

With a strong core of returning players and a few new faces, Delmarva looks to have a successful season.

“Keith Jones returned to the field the same way he left it when the season ended in the spring, as the workhorse on the field,” said Cape grad and Delmarva player Joe Baker. “His endurance is unmatched. Justin Coleman got a new look at a different position starting the match at inside center. He ran hard up and down the field attacking Severn's fly half and defensive back line. The forwards held their own in the scrum downs and line outs, and fought off most of Severn's counter ruck attempts.”

Delmarva’s mission is to grow the sport of rugby in the region while providing a positive physical and social outlet for young men. The team practices on Tuesday and Thursday nights at 6 p.m. at American Legion Post 28 on Route 24. Those interested in joining the squad may call 302-930-1003 or email delmarvarugbyclub@yahoo.com.

The squad opens Saturday, Sept. 9, at 1 p.m., with the Jersey Shore Rugby Club at American Legion Post 28, Millsboro.
