Dewey Beach moving in the right direction
There’s always a lot of pushing and pulling in Dewey Beach, whether it’s letters and threats of lawsuits, campaigns for and against taxes, public integrity charges and counter charges, or hearings before judges in the courtroom.
For the last couple of years, however, the gyrations haven’t been quite as radical. Not missing certainly, but not as radical. While discussions continue about whether big bars are paying their fair share for public services - in particular the sizeable seasonal police budget - to keep a lid on the party scene, a strong summer in Dewey has just concluded where there were relatively few problems.
News about the vibrant live music scene and movies on the beach overshadowed the usual Dewey rancor.
This was the first summer when Dewey Beach had its surveillance camera system in full operation, and the general sense is it brought down the level of stupid and malicious behavior a few notches. As Dewey and other communities continue to embrace technology, in a measured fashion, to assist with law enforcement, people will behave better in the knowledge that they are not operating under the cover of a lawless void.
Dewey is also reaping the good fortune of an improved economy, which means more properties changing hands for higher prices.
That brings more dollars into town bank accounts to provide lifeguards, police and other municipal services. Additional dollars are also coming in because of more people visiting and paying for parking. That’s taking pressure off the town budget and allowing Dewey Beach to run a surplus.
After years of controversy, the Hyatt Regency opened, adding an attractive building with rooms and condos and meeting venues to help anchor the envisioned downtown center for the community. That project is also bringing other public benefits including a public promenade, restrooms and more.
All this is to say that Dewey Beach is moving in a good direction. Courtney Riordan and Gary Mauler bring a balanced approach to solving problems and have shown steady dedication to their positions. They deserve reelection to another two-year term so they can continue to move this unique and fun resort community between ocean and bay toward the stability it deserves.
