Dog-friendly Lazy L B&B in Lewes reopens under new ownership

July 8, 2019

The Lazy L at Willow Creek Bed and Breakfast, a rare bed and breakfast property that caters to traveling dogs and their humans, is reopening for business under new owners, Lou and Carrie Wolinetz, a Maryland-based couple determined to transform the Lazy L into the dog-friendly destination in coastal Delaware.

While reading Washington Post, Carrie saw a listing that said, “dog friendly bed and breakfast in Lewes for sale.” Owning a bed and breakfast had always been a long-term retirement dream for the Wolinetzes. “Visiting the Lazy L and falling in love with this gorgeous natural retreat just accelerated the vision,” she said.

“If you’re going to have a midlife crisis, you might as well go big,” said Lou. The couple launched the new business in partnership with a cousin, Rose Griscom, director of the Institute of Thai Massage, USA, who will serve as the day-to-day innkeeper while Lou and Carrie maintain their day jobs as an aviation consultant and senior leader at the National Institutes of Health, respectively.

Griscom’s presence at the Lazy L will also connect Lewes to the broader Thai massage community of therapists and teachers.

Critical to the couple was maintaining the dog-friendly nature of the business. “We have frequently traveled with our dogs, so we know how important it is to have accommodations that allow furry family members to join the fun,” said Carrie. Not only is every room and cottage at the Lazy L welcoming to dogs, but the property also features a manicured and fenced dog yard, outdoor dog shower and other canine amenities.

The bed and breakfast also sports a pool, hot tub, outdoor fireplace patio, kayak rentals and tours, birdwatching amenities, and delicious, homemade breakfasts served on the front porch where dogs are welcome to join their humans as they eat.

Since the purchase in May, the Wolinetz family – which includes sons Shea, 9, and Soren, 5 – has been renovating and upgrading the bed and breakfast to have it ready for the first guests who arrived the weekend of June 28.

“We suspect our guests will fall in love with the Lazy L the same way we did,” Carrie said. “We took one look and realized that this is the view we wanted to wake up to for the rest of our lives. And why not share that with others?"
