Dogfish Dash takes over Milton

October 2, 2019

A steady stream of runners flowed out the truck entrance of Dogfish Head for 10 minutes Sept. 29, as more than 2,600 hoppy runners were released into the streets of Milton for the 14th annual Dogfish Dash 8K.

As one of the most popular running events in the Cape Region, race registration often closes within minutes of opening. With the field limited, it’s a hard ticket to get. This year, the field was capped at 3,250. Results show only 2,636 completed the course.

The first runner to pass the steampunk treehouse and two giant inflatable beer cans was appropriately named Sean Caskey, 28, of Dundalk, Md., who clocked a time of 27:23, a 5:31 pace. He was followed to the line by Andrew Cantor, 28, of Frederick Md., in 27:37; Francisco Puac, 34, of Georgetown in 27:39; Mark Hannagan, 28, of Newark in 27:42; and Martin Rodriguez, 37, of Selbyville.

Locals topped the women’s leaderboard, as Katie Tomlinson, 31, of Lewes took the overall title in 31:19 (23rd overall); Holly Smith, 35, of Rehoboth Beach took second in 33:10; and Bethany Wright, 24, of Milford finished third in 33:13. Michele Karsnitz, 34, of Milton took sixth in 34:27.

Sadie Tunnell, 16, of Milton won the 14-19 age group with a time of 41:10, while Susan Dunn captured the 40-49 title in 35:07. JoAnn Szczepkowski added to her trophy case by winning the 70-and-over division in 45:17.

One the men’s side, Riley Stazzone, 11, of Lewes won the 13-and-under category in 36:53, while Alexander Arnold, 14, of Millsboro and Zack Clausius, 15, of Lewes took the top two spots in the 14-19 age group. Vic Yzaguirre of Lewes finished in 38:57 to win the 60-69 division. Jules Woodall, 71, of Lewes won the 70-and-over category followed by Jack Huxtable, 81, of Rehoboth Beach; James Rittling, 70, of Millsboro; and William McArthur, 79, of Lewes. Michael Dencker, 71, of Milton took seventh.

The event raised $185,000 for the Delaware Chapter of The Nature Conservancy.
