Ella Fitzgerald biopic opens Aug. 14 at Cinema Art Theater

August 12, 2020

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Cinema Art Theater will present “Ella Fitzgerald: Just One of Those Things,” starting Friday, Aug. 14. This musical documentary follows the extraordinary journey of one of America’s most popular jazz singers.

Ella Fitzgerald was a 15-year-old street kid when she won a talent contest in 1934 at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. Within months she was a star. The film covers more than six decades as her sublime voice transforms the tragedies of her own life and the troubles of her times into joy. Never-before-seen images and unheard interviews bring her to life and tell the story of her journey as a black woman who makes her career in the face of horrifying racism. Conversations with many fellow artists including Tony Bennett, Smokey Robinson, Andre Previn, and Ella's son Ray Brown Jr. help viewers understand why she was one of the great voices of the 20th century.

Screening times are 3 p.m., Friday, Aug. 14; 6 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 15; 4 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 16; 2 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 19; and 5 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 20. Admission is $8 for members and $11 for nonmembers. Customers are encouraged to purchase tickets online. If seats are available, tickets can be purchased at the theater starting 30 minutes prior to each screening.
