Embarrassing behaviors are lunch bunch topic Aug. 7

August 2, 2020

Delaware Hospice will host a virtual lunch bunch titled Your Most Embarrassing Habit is a Gift from Your Insides, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 7.

Speaker Dr. Judy Pierson said, “All of us engage in behaviors and have thoughts we know are irrational, and yet knowing that doesn’t make them stop.”

These personal idiosyncrasies can be annoying and even disruptive. But trying to push them away rarely works. What might be more helpful is figuring out where they stem from. Even the most seemingly irrational behaviors probably make sense if put back in their original context.

For example, a need for control may be rooted in growing up in a chaotic family. Understanding the deeper emotional roots of behaviors may be the only way to finally uproot them. The poet Rumi wrote, “That which haunts us will always find a way out. The wound will not heal unless given witness. The shadow that follows us is the way in.”

“Your most embarrassing habit is the part of you that refuses to lie about the fact that something still troubles you. Unlock the secret and unlock your life,” said Pierson.
