Enjoying Torres del Paine National Park with their Cape Gazette

January 19, 2019

In December, Cape Gazette readers Ron & Pat Schaeffer traveled to Chile. They enjoyed their visit to Torres del Paine National Park, located in Patagonia. The park is 920 square miles in area and is 1750 miles south of Santiago, the capital of Chile. Behind them in the picture is the Paine Grande mountain range with the Frances Glacier to the right, part of the Southern Patagonia Ice Field, and Punta Bariloche to the left at 8200 ft. Looking closely you can see the tip of Lake Pehoe to the right, one of the many lakes at 8.5 sq. miles. It is a pristine and rugged region with glaciers, lakes, granite mountains, endless hiking trails, and neverending winds. “We also visited the Darwin Mountain Range and glaciers along the Beagle Channel that is farther south, about 500 miles, but were unable to get to Cape Horn by boat because of 120 mph winds,” said Ron. “This region of the world remains a remote and wild area with a low year-round population (this is their summer), and is stunning in its natural beauty.”
