Equetta Jones named assistant principal at HOB

Award-winning educator excited to meet students and families
August 4, 2021

New H.O. Brittingham Elementary Assistant Principal Equetta Jones has left the Red Clay School District for the first time in her career, and she is excited to meet the students and families of Milton.

“I believe in longevity and commitment, but it was time to broaden my horizons, learn and grow, and this was the opportunity to do so,” she said.

Before joining Cape, Jones was assistant principal at Highlands Elementary in Wilmington. She was named Assistant Principal of the Year by the National Association of Elementary Principals in 2018 and 2020. In 2021, she was nominated for the LifeChanger of the Year Award, which recognizes educators across the country.

“It was great to be acknowledged on the national level by a parent,” she said. “Definitely an honor.”

Jones said she feels very welcome in the Cape district. She said Principal Kyle Bentley is a great role model, and she looks forward to meeting students and their families.

“My personal philosophy aligns with the district,” she said. “To see that be the vision of the district I’m working for gives me joy.”

Jones said she still keeps in touch with former students and families from Highlands Elementary. Born and raised in Wilmington, where she still lives, Jones said she enjoys the solitude of her one-hour commute each way; the family also has a home in Lewes. She has three grown children, all in college, and one grandson.

After earning her bachelor’s degree from Delaware State University, Jones completed graduate coursework at Grand Canyon University, and she holds an education specialist degree. She said she is close to finishing her doctoral dissertation.

Jones replaces Yvette Davenport, who is now principal of Hartly Elementary in the Capital School District.
