In May, Cape Gazette readers Ron and Pat Schaeffer visited Iceland. They toured many unique scenic sites on the remote, northern European island. The thundering Gullfoss waterfall (Golden Falls) sits on the glacial Hvita river and is in a nature reserve area to protect the surrounding ecosystem. The waterfall has a rocky upper stage that drops 35 feet and a second cascade that drops another 70 feet straight down into a narrow gorge below. “You can hear the thundering sound of the falls hundreds of yards away, and the wind-driven spray can soak you,” said Ron. “This is considered one of Europe’s most powerful falls in terms of sheer wildness and fury. It’s a reflection of the beautiful natural environment you find throughout Iceland.”
