Holts Landing State Park will sponsor a free hike of the 1.7-mile Sea Hawk Trail on New Year’s Day as part of America's State Parks First Day Hikes initiative in all 50 states. These events offer individuals and families an opportunity to begin the new year rejuvenating and connecting with the outdoors by taking a healthy hike Sunday, Jan. 1, at a state park close to home.
“We are excited to continue hosting First Day Hikes as part of this national effort to get people outdoors and into our parks. First Day Hikes are a great way to cure cabin fever and burn off those extra holiday calories by starting off the new year with an invigorating walk or hike in one of our beautiful state parks,” said Delaware State Parks Director Ray Bivens.
First Day Hikes originated more than 25 years ago at the Blue Hills Reservation, a state park in Milton, Mass. Last year, more than 55,000 people participated on guided hikes that covered over 133,000 miles on 1,100 hikes across the country. In Delaware alone, 983 people participated in First Day Hikes across the state for a combined total of 2,057 miles.
“America’s State Parks provide havens for young and old alike to explore the beauty and serenity of nature through outdoor recreation,” said Lewis Ledford, executive director, National Association of State Park Directors. “Hiking offers inspiring ways to improve your physical and mental health while discovering beautiful public lands in every state.”
Park interpreters will staff the hike, which is on flat terrain. Participants should meet at the main parking lot and be prepared for muddy conditions. For more information, call 302-227-6991. America's State Parks is committed to promoting outdoor recreation in state parks as a way to address obesity, especially among children. Getting kids outside and unplugged from video games and other electronic media creates a unique connection with nature that promotes physical and mental well-being and encourages creativity and stewardship of shared resources.
