Four candidates file for Rehoboth Beach’s 2025 election
The deadline to file for Rehoboth Beach’s 2025 municipal election was end-of-the-day June 2, and four people have thrown their hat into the ring. The election will be held at city hall Saturday, Aug. 9.
The four candidates for two commissioner seats are Commissioner Edward Chrzanowski, who is seeking his third consecutive three-year term, and first-time candidates Jeffrey Goode, Susan Stewart and Chris Galanty.
Commissioner Francis “Bunky” Markert did not file, which means there will be at least one new commissioner.
Following the deadline, Markert said he had been torn about running for re-election for some time. It wasn’t any one issue, he said, but more about committing to three more years and the time constraints he faces with personal and other volunteer obligations he has.
“I am heartened to learn that we have some highly qualified, capable and experienced people who have chosen to represent the citizens and businesses for the upcoming election, to guide our city government in making the best choices for the future of Rehoboth,” said Markert, who served one term.
Markert said it’s been an honor to represent the city’s constituents and work with the other commissioners on difficult decisions. There was a consensus formed on the majority of those decisions, he said, and that’s quite an achievement in the current climate. He also thanked city staff.
“I come away from this experience with a tremendous sense of respect and admiration for those I have served with, and also for those who served in the past and who got us here,” said Markert. “The city staff are the most committed folks I have ever worked with. We are so fortunate to have them and to live in this very special place.”
To be eligible to vote in Rehoboth’s election, a person must be 18, a resident, freeholder or leaseholder, and registered in the city’s books of registered voters. If a registered voter misses two consecutive annual elections, their name will be placed on an inactive list and will be notified by postcard requesting their voting status. The deadline to register is 4:30 p.m., Thursday, July 10.
Absentee ballots will be available beginning Wednesday, June 25. Ballots will be sent to everyone who has an absentee ballot request form on file. Any qualified elector may request an absentee ballot to vote by filing a request for an absentee ballot form no later than noon, Friday, Aug. 11. The deadline for the city to mail ballots is Tuesday, Aug. 5. Ballots must be received by mail or in person before the polls close on the day of the Election.
The Rehoboth Beach Homeowners Association’s annual candidate forum will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 19, in the upstairs meeting room of the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company, 219 Rehoboth Ave. There is elevator access available.
The Cape Gazette’s candidate questionnaire will run in the Friday, Aug. 1, edition.
