Garden project takes root at Milton Elementary

Classes build raised beds and till soil to grow vegetables
October 14, 2022

Students were busy the morning of Oct. 7, tilling soil in preparation for the planting of radishes, turnips, arugula and kale in raised garden beds on the grounds of Milton Elementary with the help of Rachel Terracina from Healthy Foods for Healthy Kids.

Terracina said HFHK works with 44 schools in Delaware, mostly in New Castle County, but it is expanding its reach into Sussex County as well.

HFHK Director of Community Engagement and Partnerships Anita Broccolino said the raised gardens were built in September, and students will harvest their plantings in November. The organization’s Education Cultivation program supports Next Generation Science Standards and is a full seed-to-cafeteria table program that includes every student regardless of age or ability, she said.

“All of the food planted, grown, cared for and harvested by the students in their school gardens is taken to Cafeteria/Nutrition Services, where it is prepared for the entire student body to enjoy together at lunch,” Broccolino wrote in an Oct. 10 email. “Not only does the HFHK program teach science, but every student learns how to grow their own food, but then gets to taste the vegetables, which fosters healthy eating and living habits and ‘plants the seed’ for better food choices.”
