Students were busy the morning of Oct. 7, tilling soil in preparation for the planting of radishes, turnips, arugula and kale in raised garden beds on the grounds of Milton Elementary with the help of Rachel Terracina from Healthy Foods for Healthy Kids.
Terracina said HFHK works with 44 schools in Delaware, mostly in New Castle County, but it is expanding its reach into Sussex County as well.
HFHK Director of Community Engagement and Partnerships Anita Broccolino said the raised gardens were built in September, and students will harvest their plantings in November. The organization’s Education Cultivation program supports Next Generation Science Standards and is a full seed-to-cafeteria table program that includes every student regardless of age or ability, she said.
