Gary J. Ceman, dedicated technology leader, volunteer
Gary “Pops” J. Ceman ended his courageous journey with cancer Saturday, July 19, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of strength, service, and hope. Born Sept. 6, 1959, in Wilmington, Gary embraced each day with optimism and determination, facing every challenge with grace. Throughout his resilient battle, he inspired everyone around him with his unwavering spirit and remarkable courage.
Gary was a devoted husband to Karen McDonough McMahon, and a proud father and stepfather to Chad Ceman (Britnie), Jordan Ceman, Ally Ceman Lingo (Ken), Christopher McMahon (Krissy), and Samuel “Jack” McMahon. His grandchildren, Jaxson, Carter, Ryker and Bennett Ceman, Saylor and Ken Lingo IV, and Crew and Hayes McMahon, were the light of his life.
He is also survived by his father, James Ceman; his sisters, Joanne Marra (Ernesto) and Carol Tuttle (Paul); sisters-in-law, Noreen LaSorsa and Eileen Taylor; and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Shirley Pottage Ceman.
Gary had a deep passion for fishing, boating, space, softball, Philadelphia sports, music, and craftsmanship. A tool enthusiast and grill master, he was known for his smoked brisket and quick wit. Above all, he cherished time with family and friends.
A tireless volunteer, Gary gave his time and talents to the Rehoboth Beach–Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce (Volunteer of the Year, 2017), Dewey Business Partnership, and Boy Scouts of America as a troop leader. He took great joy in preparing the Santa House, leading the Sea Witch Parade with his festively decorated golf cart, and building anything needed for the Dewey Winter Gala. One of his most cherished traditions was placing memorial Christmas wreaths throughout Dewey Beach to honor those no longer with us during the holidays.
By his side always were his loyal dog, Bear, and his lifelong friend, Chris Maliszewski, with whom he shared decades of laughter, Eagles wins, and fishing trips.
Gary’s life was made rich not only by the many roles he filled—husband, father, grandfather, friend, mentor, volunteer—but by the deep and lasting impact he had on everyone who knew him. He will be remembered for his humor, wisdom, strength, generosity, and unwavering loyalty.
His son-in-law, Ken Lingo, beautifully summarized his legacy: “A great man leaves behind a great legacy—and his family says all anyone needs to know. He was often the anchor in a tumultuous sea, a sign of surety and safe harbor.”
Gary was also a dedicated technology leader, whose career spanned more than four decades across government, aerospace, and financial services.
He began his distinguished career at Singer-Link Flight Simulation, where he led IT efforts for the Space Shuttle Flight Simulation Training System at NASA’s Johnson Space Center. His work developing and testing real-time software played a crucial role in training generations of astronauts, directly contributing to the success and safety of U.S. space missions.
Gary went on to serve in senior leadership roles in the private sector at Residential Credit Solutions and Saxon Mortgage, where he oversaw IT operations for national mortgage servicing firms. He was widely respected for his deep expertise in data security, disaster recovery, and enterprise systems, seamlessly combining technical depth with strategic vision.
Most recently, Gary served the State of Delaware’s Department of Health and Social Services, leading statewide IT initiatives to modernize healthcare and social service systems, enhance cybersecurity, and expand digital access. He retired July 1, 2025, after a decade of public service and a lifetime committed to improving lives through technology.
Gary will be remembered not only for his sharp intellect and calm leadership, but for a life lived in service to others, whether in space technology, public health, or his own backyard community. He was a true pillar of strength, love, and innovation, and his memory will live on in all those he touched.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and entire care teams at Tunnell Cancer Center and AccentCare Hospice. Their dedication and compassion, during a challenging time, brought comfort, dignity, and peace to our family.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 10, at Dewey Beach Lions Club Clubhouse, 115 McKinley Ave., Dewey Beach. Family and friends may visit beginning at noon. Gary loved summer and bright colors. In his spirit, we ask that you wear casual summer attire.
