Georgetown All-Stars finish third at Senior Softball World Series

Host team falls to Southwest in semifinals
August 6, 2018

The Georgetown Senior Softball All-Stars’ Cinderella season and dreams of a repeat World Series title came to an end Aug. 4 with a 2-1 loss to a tough Southwest team from Waco, Texas, in the semifinal round.

Jordyn DiFava went 1-for-4 and had the lone RBI for the host team, while Sierra Livingston went 2-for-3, and Siera Jones and Kelsey Kormanik each went 1-for-3.

Taylor Wroten went the distance for the host team, striking out eight Southwest batters. Wroten threw every pitch for the host team representing Delaware’s District 3.

“I always tell coach that I want the ball,” said Wroten. “I don’t want anybody else to have it. We have some injuries, and they haven’t pitched, and not to be selfish, but I want control of the game. We just had one bad inning, and they had some hits that fell.”

“We knew going into this that they had a great squad,” said District 3 manager Craig Kormanik. “To me, in my mind, this was the championship game. Our girls fought hard and we had a great run. Once again, hats off to the Southwest team. They did a great job. We hit the ball hard, but we couldn’t find the holes. This is a special group of girls I have. They step up when they need to. You just can’t find the quality of human beings I had on the team, not just players, but the people that they are. It doesn’t change who they are. This is one game. It’s disappointing, but in the game of life, these girls are going to successful careers in sports and out of sports.”

Each team had five hits in the contest.

The District 3 team scored first in the third inning when DiFava’s double knocked in Rye Elliott.

“They are a tough team,” said DiFava. “It’s hard to beat a good team twice.”

Georgetown had beaten the Southwest squad 2-1 July 31 in the second game of round robin.

“Everyone played great, and we hit the ball hard,” added DiFava. “It just didn’t come out the way we wanted.”

The Southwest team answered with two runs in the bottom of the third inning on RBIs from Kennedy Cox and Beronica DeLosRios.

“It is tough,” said Kormanik. “You always want to be playing in the championship game. But they are tough girls. They will regroup and come out and play the East team tough.”

Host secures third place

The Georgetown team moved into the consolation game with the East squad, where they defeated the Worcester, Mass. team 5-1 to garner third place.

Elliott went 3-for-4 in the game. Kylie Kruger and Hadlie Jarvis each went 2-for-3. Kruger, Livingston and Kayla Evans each knocked in a run for the host team.

The District 3 team scored in the first inning when Elliott singled and was moved ahead by DiFava and Kruger. Livingston got her home on a sacrifice fly to center field.

They picked up two runs in the third inning on scores by Kruger and Jones. Evans and Jarvis drove in runs in the fifth.

Wroten sat down five East batters while scattering eight hits on her way to her sixth win of the series.

“It was definitely an experience,” said Wroten. “Being here with all of the teams and all of these amazing girls, it was just an opportunity that I’ll remember forever.”

“It’s a bummer,” said Kelsey Kormanik. “Last year we weren’t expected to win, and we just had fun and what happened, happened. This year, our goal was to win it all, and we just fell short. Third place is an honor, but next year we’re just going to come back harder.”

“It’s not how I wanted it to end,” said Elliott, adding, “I made a lot of new friends.”

“This series was a complete team effort,” said DiFava. “Offensively and defensively we had each other’s back. Taylor pitched really well. Everyone played a vital role. We couldn’t have gone this far without any one of these girls. Props to everyone.”

“It was a wonderful experience with 12 incredible girls with a lot of talent and great people in general.” said the District 3 manager. “It was a pleasure to work with them.”
