Glen E. Albert, U.S. Army Retired

Glen E. Albert, 94, passed away peacefully Sunday, Aug. 26, 2018, surrounded by his loving family at his home in Harbeson.

     Glen was born in Winnsboro, La., Jan. 5, 1924, to James L. Albert and Susie (Grayson) Albert.  He worked on his family farm as a young boy.  Upon graduation from Crowvillle High School in 1941, Glen worked in construction in Winnsboro until he was drafted, along with three of his siblings, into the U.S. Army in 1943.  He fought in the Normandy Invasion during World War II, in the Korean War and in the Vietnam War. 

Following World War II, he was assigned to Fort Miles where he met his wife of 69 years, Mildred V. Davidson, who passed away May 27, 2018. During his service he was decorated with many medals, commendations and citations. After military retirement as a command sergeant major, they returned to the Harbeson farmhouse in 1973.  He then began a career as a boat mechanic at the Rehoboth Bay Marina in Dewey Beach until he retired as service manager from the marina in 1989.  Glen was an exceptional mechanic and a successful fisherman.  His favorite fishing companion was his brother-in-law, Bob Webb. He was also known for maintaining an extensive summer garden full of wonderful fruits and vegetables which he loved sharing with his family and friends.

After retiring he volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, and was a member of the Henlopen Ruritan and American Legion. He was also a very active member of the Harbeson United Methodist Church and served as lay leader and on the administrative board.  Mildred and Glen together delivered Meals on Wheels for 20 years and received several awards for their dedication to their community. Glen will be fondly remembered by his family and colleagues for his humor, his smile, and his ability to welcome strangers, his devotion to his community and country, and mostly for his unconditional love of his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.    

     Glen is preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his brothers, Roy, Bryant, William and James; his sisters, Edlene and Ella Mae; and his grandson Cory Burton.  

     He is survived by his children James Albert and wife Shirley of Maryland, Susan Eaton and husband Clem of Indiana, Glenda Fischer and husband Larry of Virginia, Gary Albert and wife Reggie of New Jersey and Becky Burton and husband Andy of Millsboro.  He is also survived by his grandchildren Kathy Minton and husband Brent, Jennifer Farless and Brad York, all of Indiana, Matt Fischer and wife Heather of Massachusetts, Michelle Whitlock and husband Jansen, Kelly Witteborg and husband Ivan, all of Virginia, Rianne Bowlby and husband Jeff of New Jersey, Ken Albert and wife Chony of Ohio,  and Ashley Carr and husband Jeff of Newark; and four great-grandchildren Baylee, Bryce and Luca, all of Indiana, and Mikaela of Ohio.

   A funeral service will be held Sunday, Sept. 2, at 1 p.m., at Harbeson United Methodist Church, 18647 Harbeson Road, Harbeson, where a time of visitation for friends and family will begin at noon.
