If you read my last article, you know that the PGA Tour is back playing this week at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas. I watched the first day of the tournament on TV and needless to say, it was so quiet! Watching the golf tournament with no fans and only the announcer talking, is pretty crazy. You can actually hear the birds chirping as the only other sound. Some of the players are not showing much rust from not competing. For example, Justin Rose and Gary Woodland shot 63 and 65, respectively, in the first round. It's great that the long break didn't seem to affect them much.
Golf has an opportunity here to gain more TV interest because it will be one of the only live sports on until the middle of July. Major League Soccer starts up again along with NBA basketball at the end of July. I hope they are all successful with their restarts.
Major League Soccer is planning to play a World Cup-style tournament in Orlando, Fla., with all 24 teams to start out. The teams will be arranged in six groups of four for round robin play, followed by a championship round. The winning club will get a separate trophy. Then, if possible, the teams will resume their normal seasons in August in their home stadiums. I hope this all can take place safely and not have any problems.
Baseball is finally on the road toward some kind of a season as well. In the last week, both sides, players and owners, have presented separate proposals for a shortened season. I hope it isn’t too late to save baseball, but in my opinion, they only have about a week to figure out what to do. As a last resort, Commissioner Rob Manfred has the power to make everybody play a 50-game season. Let’s hope this mandate doesn't have to come to be and they just come up with a good plan ASAP.
So, I know it’s hard to believe, but I have officially run out of positive sports books to recommend to you. I have read many, but some were just too sad to recommend for enjoyable reading. So you are on your own for now. If I read a good one over the summer, I will certainly mention it.
