GOP and Dems need to work together

December 5, 2023

I read the responses to recent letters written by Rep. Bryan Shupe and Deirdre Taylor. I find it funny why Gerry Kuhlman chose Sussex County over Connecticut and California. I bet it was low taxes. Maybe the little to no crime? I don’t know if Alan Roth is a lifelong Delaware resident, but if he wants to see a county that is poorly run, look no further than New Castle County. You wouldn't believe you’re in the same state! Taxes three times higher. Schools are having tough issues keeping teachers! It’s a county run by Democrats for the last 15 years.

I've seen the difference between both counties, and one thing for sure, there's no housing rush in New Castle! Sussex is a beautiful place, but people who lived there for years have seen changes and are concerned. But Sussex doesn't have the tax burden that New Castle has. New Castle County has bought four golf courses and even a $5 million hotel for homeless people. There are too many charter schools; the public schools are suffering. My kids went to A.I. du Pont in the early 2000s. It was a powerhouse school with more than 350 kids in the marching band. My daughter went to Rose Bowl parade. Now it has the lowest enrollment of any public high school in the state. It has 600 students and is a mile from the president's mansion.

But with the responses, it seems like the tide is moving south. If you look at the voting in the last two elections, you see the difference in counties. So we'll see how Sussex County goes with the 2024 elections. Nobody is saying you have to be Republican or Democrat, just don't mess up a good thing! Complaining about $600,000 to $700,000 homes being built is better than paying for stupid golf courses, a hotel and half-full schools. So you can see the difference between ideas. I hope the state figures it out with the new electric car mandate. What are the people working at gas stations, the DMV and lower-income people going to do? Gas tax? You need both sides – Democrats and Republicans – working together to figure it out! Delaware is a very small state and a few bad mandates can put a lot of pressure on its people.
