Grants available for childhood-obesity prevention
The Next Generation of the Delaware Community Foundation recently announced that for the next two years, the organization will provide grants to out-of-school programs that address childhood obesity.
The grants will be awarded for programs that promote physical fitness, nutrition and education. The program must incorporate mentoring by but not limited to family members, role models or peers.
The Next Generation (TNG) will entertain grants up to $10,000 for the 2011 awards. Requests for funding must be submitted by Wednesday, Sept. 15.
TNG President Mark Lucey stated the group would no longer provide grant support solely for after-school programs designed to serve at-risk youths. Instead, it is shifting support to focus on programs combating childhood obesity.
“Childhood obesity is a growing concern nationwide and The Next Generation of the Delaware Community Foundation felt it was vital that we pledge our support specifically to local agencies promoting wellness, education and physical activity,” said Lucey.
“According to ygoy.com, almost 60 percent of children in America are obese. Studies also reveal the fact that 40 percent of obese children and 70 percent of obese adolescents become obese adults. That’s a cycle we need to work to end.”
Only nonprofit organizations that are located in Delaware or serve Delawareans and have a 501(c)(3) designation by the Internal Revenue Service are eligible to apply.
To be considered for funding, the organization must be primarily focused on children. Funding decisions will be made in January 2011.
