Helen 'Sammy' Patton, minister's wife
Helen Virginia 'Sammy' Patton, 95, of Rehoboth Beach, passed away Sunday, Nov. 16, 2014, at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford. She was born July 28, 1919, in Salem, W.Va., daughter of the late Harry M. and Leota Catherine (Blake) Davis.
Sammy attended Salem College for two years. In 1946, she married Edgar Lewis Patton at Salem Baptist Church in Salem, upon his return from World War II. She supported her husband as a minister's wife for 40 years, after which they retired together to Rehoboth Beach. Sammy was a wonderful wife, mom, grandmom, friend and so much more.
Sammy loved to read, do crosswords and she belonged to several bowling leagues. Her favorite spot was her back porch where she could enjoy the birds, squirrels, cats and wildlife which she attracted with all the food she provided. This is where she said her goodbye to the life she had known and enjoyed in her unique style. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
In addition to her parents, Sammy was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar L. Patton; her sister, Ruth Davis; and her brother, Joe Davis. She is survived by her daughter, C. Michele Patterson of Owings Mills, Md.; granddaughter, Jenny L. Israel and her husband Brian J. of Stony Brook, N.Y.; grandson, James D. Patterson IV of Richmond, Va.; and great-grandson, Brayden James Israel of Stony Brook, NY.
A Graveside Service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Nov. 21, at Henlopen Memorial Park, 28787 Lockerman Road, Milton.
Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes.
