Henlopen Acres’ municipal election will take place 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Aug. 30, at town hall, 104 Tidewaters.

There are three candidates – resident and incumbent Commissioner Jeffrey Jacobs, resident and planning commission Chair Lee Raesly, and nonresident Alex Jacobs. The Jacobses are not related.

Jeffrey Jacobs has been a commissioner since he was appointed in 2020. Alex Jacobs ran last year, but lost to incumbent Commissioners Beatrix “Paddy” Richards and Tiffany Derrickson. Raesley is running for the first time.

Sitting Commissioner Richard Thompson is not running for re-election. He had been a commissioner since 2018.

The successful candidates will be sworn in for their three-year terms at the town’s organizational meeting at 10 a.m., Friday, Sept. 12, in town hall.

During that meeting, commissioners will also pick the next mayor. Former Mayor Joni Reich, whose seat was not up for re-election, stepped down in mid-July after serving as a commissioner since 2014 and mayor since May 2018. Commissioner Tim Hidell, who served as president pro tempore under Reich, has served as acting mayor since and will continue to do so until at least the organizational meeting. Resident Lyndie Hertrich was sworn in as commissioner during a special meeting July 29 to serve out the final year of Reich’s three-year term.

Completed absentee ballots can be returned by mail or in person. They must be received at town hall before the polls close the day of the election, which is noon.
