Herbal cookbook talk to focus on women’s health April 12

April 6, 2021

The Lewes Public Library’s Cooks & Books program will welcome wellness experts Abbey Rodriguez and Jennifer Kurdyla, authors of “Root & Nourish: An Herbal Cookbook for Women’s Wellness” for a live, online discussion at 5 p.m., Monday, April 12, in partnership with Browseabout Books.

Plants, specifically herbs and spices, have been used for centuries among holistic healing traditions around the world to promote health, longevity, and beauty. “Root & Nourish” is the first cookbook of its kind to pair everyday herbal cooking with women’s health concerns, specifically related to digestion, mental health and female reproductive hormonal health. Alongside affordable, seasonal, and sustainable recipes, the book highlights mindfulness and holistic lifestyle practices drawn from yoga and Ayurveda that will help incorporate wellness into every part of the day.

The conversation will be moderated by Denise Clemons, Cape Gazette food columnist and author of “A Culinary History of Southern Delaware.”

“This unique approach to plant-based cooking and healthy lifestyle practice is far more than a cookbook. I am excited about the opportunity to speak with the authors about their inspiration for the book and their insights for applying these techniques and making these dishes,” said Clemons.

Abbey Rodriguez is a certified holistic nutritionist, herbalist and food content creator. Over the last five years, she has been developing recipes for women and young families on her food and wellness blog, The Butter Half.

Jennifer Kurdyla is a wellness educator and writer. For more than 10 years, she has maintained a plant-based lifestyle, during which time she has come to revere the power of whole, natural foods to nourish the mind and body by developing and sharing recipes in her tiny New York kitchen.

The discussion is free to the public. Registration is required. To sign up, go to lewes.lib.de.us and visit the Virtual Programs for Adults page.

Participants also are encouraged to support the author by purchasing a copy of the book from local independent bookstore Browseabout Books. Each copy purchased comes with an archival bookplate signed by the author. Orders may be placed online at browseaboutbooks.com, by calling the store at 302-226-2665, or in person at 133 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach.
