International Cultural Exchange names new local coordinator

December 14, 2020

International Cultural Exchange Services recently welcomed Ahmet Yuksel as a new local coordinator.

Originally from Istanbul, Turkey, Yuksel came to the U.S. as an exchange student in 2010.  He recently graduated with a doctorate degree from Wilmington University.

“I had been involved in many student activities in the university, and international student organization was one of them. I love interacting with students from different countries,” he said. “I am excited to work with exchange students because I was once an exchange student and know the challenges of being an international student in the U.S. Therefore, I would like to help international students with some of the challenges they may face while in the program such as acculturation, language barrier, homesickness, and socializing.”

Ahmet said he is excited for this new opportunity to work with international high school students and the local families that host them.  He said having exchange students in local schools and communities increases mutual understanding and improves relationships between countries.

A Rehoboth Beach resident, Yuksel will be working with families and schools in Lewes and the surrounding areas.

Currently he is looking for families that would like to host for the 2021-22 school year.

Exchange students live as a member of the host family, not a guest or boarder. They participate in family activities, follow host family rules, and help with chores.

Students have their own medical insurance and spending money to cover all personal expenses. Host families provide room and board, and loving parental guidance to the student. As local coordinator, Yuksel is available to answer questions, give advice and provide general support to students and host families throughout the experience.

For more information about hosting or working with ICES, contact Ahmet Yuksel at 302-930-7028 or ayuksel@icesusa.org, or go to icesusa.org.

ICES is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting a peaceful world by increasing international awareness and understanding through cultural sharing experiences.
