Irene P. Sorbara Foundation awards over $100,000 in scholarships

January 25, 2015

In 2014, Delaware Technical Community College inducted the Irene P. Sorbara Foundation into its Legacy Society. The induction ceremony took place Oct. 15 at the Jack F. Owens Campus in Georgetown.

The Sorbara Foundation was recognized for the tremendous impact it has made in the lives of more than 100 students so far. The foundation awarded scholarships totaling $106,000 to 67 students attending Delaware Tech this academic year.

The foundation was created in accordance with the wishes of Irene P. Sorbara upon her passing. Sorbara was a lifelong resident of the Lewes-Rehoboth Beach Cape Region, and a beloved teacher at Rehoboth Elementary School for over 30 years. Delaware Tech is honored to further her passion for education by awarding scholarships in her name to Sussex County residents pursuing degrees in education or nursing.

“The Irene P. Sorbara Foundation has been an amazing friend to our college and to our students. Delaware Tech shares Mrs. Sorbara’s passion for changing lives through education, and we are honored to play a part in continuing her life’s work here at the Owens Campus,” said Dr. Ileana Smith, vice president and campus director.

The Irene P. Sorbara Foundation Trust is managed by PNC Wealth Management of Lewes. To be eligible for a scholarship, students must be enrolled at Delaware Tech’s Owens Campus pursuing a degree in education or nursing, live in Sussex County, maintain a GPA of at least 3.2, and be ineligible for federal Pell grants.

The Legacy Society at Delaware Tech honors donors and foundations that have given more than $50,000 to the college, or who have arranged for a gift to be left to the college through estate plans.
