It’s not the time to reopen Delaware

May 15, 2020

All I can say is that once again, the Democrats have caved in to the mob. Going against every sane and expert piece of advice about the dangers of reopening the economy too soon, which in Sussex County means allowing people on the beaches and boardwalks.

People will ignore the situation in Germany and South Korea where there has already been an uptick in infections as they reopened. Even Trump’s COVID task force’s own predictions quoted in the NY Times, “An internal Trump administration report expects about 200,000 daily cases by June. The White House bars coronavirus task force officials from testifying to Congress without approval” should be enough of a warming that this irrational and reckless reopening is what will cause the second wave of this pandemic.

I have come to learn the Delawarean trait of most elected officials not wanting to alienate anyone or ruffle feathers of those on the other side of the aisle.  For instance, many Democrats and Republicans are best buds, and no one wants to anger the gun owners or the don’t tread on me people or the farmers or the developers, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.

Many obviously irresponsible business owners, who are perfectly willing to cause a spike in infections and deaths as long as they are making money again, are pushing for this reopening no matter the cost to our health.  The sign outside the Anchorage Motel on Route 1 says it all, “Why are the beach and boardwalk not open?” as the Republicans in Sussex County clamor for the irresponsible reopening and just sweep the fact that there will be upticks in infections and deaths under the rug.

I must admit Carney held his ground for a good while, but now is starting to cave in under the pressure from those who think the pandemic is a hoax, that Trump is doing just a wonderful job controlling it, and that people just die all the time anyway.

So the call is out that we need to start pretending it is not that serious and get back to the simple enjoyments of life.  So wrong and so deadly.
