Northwest High, a public school from Germantown, Md., walked the dog at the Tidewater Classic cross country meet at Winterplace Park in Salisbury, Md., Oct. 7. The race for girls followed by boys was run under absolutely splendid fall conditions and was an amalgam of 22 teams from Maryland and Delaware. The start was spread out for 23 teams, but quickly funneled into four wide or die in the first 200 meters.
Branson Odour of Northwest was the overall boys' race winner with a time of 16:07. Ben Bamforth of Sussex Tech was second in 16:30. Ben was followed by Bryan Perry of Polytech in 16:41, Tolson Ibronke of Smyrna in 16:51, Komlan Attiogbe of Northwest in 16:54 and Nate Twining of CR in 17:00.
Sam Nye was Cape’s first finisher in 21st place with a time of 17:43. Greg Boyce was Cape’s second runner in 40th place with a time of 18:32.
Northwest won the team title with 38 points followed by Sussex Tech 80, Caesar Rodney 156. Cape boys were seventh out of 23 teams with 223 total points.
The girls' race was won by Kathryn Gearhart of Easton in 18:02 followed by Roxanne Ramirez of Sussex Tech in 19:07. Sarah Dziak was Cape’s first runner; she placed in 10th in 21:17.
Comparing the results to a summer road race, the top 107 girls broke 25 minutes, which would be a flying feat in any local road race.
The Jaguars of Northwest High School of Germantown won the team title with 69 points followed by Caesar Rodney 110, North Caroline 149, Sussex Tech 165 and Easton 176. Cape placed ninth of 22 teams with 214 points.
