James Carroll Crowl, helped others

January 12, 2023

James Carroll “Jim” Crowl, 82, of Lewes, died Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2022, as a result of an accident. Jim was born Jan. 22, 1940, the oldest son of the late Webster and Ruth Crowl. He was born and raised in Street, Md., on his parents’ farm, attended Highland Elementary School, and graduated from North Harford High School.

After graduation, he was a desk clerk/dispatcher at the Maryland State Police in Benson, Md., eventually becoming a police officer for the town of Bel Air. He then worked as a tax assessor for the State of Maryland in Westminster, Md., and finished his career in Denton, Md. Jim then retired and found his community in the Rehoboth Beach/Lewes area, where he lived for the rest of his life.

Jim was the oldest of his siblings and was preceded in death by his brother, John. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Harrett Crowl; and his sister, Ruth Ann Barrett and her husband Richard.

Jim was married in February 1963 and had two children, son, James Carroll Crowl Jr. of Bel Air, Md., born in 1963, and a daughter, Lisa Lynn Peffers (Lawrence) of Forest Hill, Md., born in 1965. After 11 years of marriage, Jim and his wife divorced and he never remarried. He had two grandsons, Christopher B. Sturgill (Laura)of Marysville, Wash., and Justin L. Peffers of Forest Hill; and a great-granddaughter, Scarlett Sturgill of Marysville.

We can not forget his precious fur baby, Samantha, who was the true love of his life. She was always by his side traveling around in the jeep, walking around the neighborhood, or just hanging out. They would go on several walks a day with their friends in the neighborhood. She misses him terribly. He also loved his fish in his large fish pond just outside his front door.

Jim had many friends in the Rehoboth area. He loved taking his vehicle on the beach, walking the boardwalk and daily visits to North Shores. He even used to get in trouble with the park rangers sometimes for feeding the wild animals in the winter months. Jim loved when friends and family came to visit and they would spend their time at Tower Beach always using the same beach umbrella that was about as old as he was. Friday nights were for happy hour at his favorite spot to enjoy a martini or a beer.

He was a man of many words and would always express his opinion. However, he was a kind, gentle person who would do anything for you. Jim had a passion to help others. He volunteered for Meals on Wheels for many years and was liked by his customers.

In lieu of flowers, the family recommends donations in Jim’s memory to Meals on Wheels Lewes-Rehoboth, 32409 Lewes Georgetown Hwy., Lewes, DE.

A Celebration of Life for Jim will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 21, at Epworth United Methodist Church, 19285 Holland Glade Road, Rehoboth.
